Car of the Week 1999 EK9 Civic Type R
This week’s spotlight is on one of my all-time favorites: the legendary Honda Civic Type R (EK9).
Released in 1997, the EK9 was Honda’s first Civic to wear the iconic red “Type R” badge. It came with a high-revving B16B engine (1.6L VTEC pushing 185 hp), close-ratio 5-speed manual, and a lightweight, track-focused design. It wasn’t about luxury — it was about pure driving feel.
The EK9 has become a true JDM icon, known for its razor-sharp handling, screaming VTEC, and timeless hatchback style. Even today, it’s one of the most respected hot hatches ever made.
